Nagarkot
Situated at an altitude of 2,175 m above the sea level Nagarkot is the second highest point on the valley rim. Lying about 20 km north-east from central Bhaktapur, it is reknown for the mesmerising panaromic view of the Himalayan range including the Everest. Watching the sun rising above the snow-caped Himalays and the very sun setting behind the western high mountains in the evening makes it more worthwhile to get upto the Nagarkot hill top. Cool atmosphere, unique hiking trails through Tamang villages, beautiful landscape and good tourist facilities are additional attractions at Nagarkot. Writers & novelists stay months in the traqulity for concentration and inspiration.
Changu Narayan
Lying about 6 km North from Bhaktapur, Changu Narayan is one of the seven World Heritage sites located in the the valley. It is named after the shrine called Changu Narayan, the oldest known temple in Kathmandu valley. The most ancient and precious samples of then stone sculptures can be seen scattered around the temple, which was built by King Mandev in 464 AD. The walking trail from here to Nagarkot is oen of the popular hiking trails and breath taking among tourists. From Changu Narayan a very clear view of Kathamndu valley can be observed.
Thimi
About 5 km westward from Bhaktapur lies Thimi, a traditional Newari city specially popular for its handicrafts and green vegetables. It indeed is the vegetable garden of Kathmandu valley. The traditional pottery work as well has made Thimi famous throughout the country. Besides pottery, Thimi has conquered a name for itself in the traditional art of making colourful paper-masse masks. Walking through the narrow lanes of Thimi could be is a way to experience the life style of the local Newars.
Surya Vinayak
Suryavinayak is the best and the most beautiful jungle spots around Bhaktapur. Many devotees visit the Ganesh Shrine, built in the middle of the jungle and worship mostly on Saturday and Tuesdays. It is believed that the first rays of the Sun touches the green forest of Suryabinayak. The jungle is also believed to have many life saving herbs among many known and unknown species of flora. Only at 10 minutes walk from Bhaktapur, this is ‘The Spot’ for bird watchers.
