Bhaktapur Night A night to remember in Bhaktapur

Imagine being transported a few centuries back in time, to a starlight night in one of the ancient ruling cities of Nepal. A medieval world unto itself, with herringbone paved streets, a multitude of alleys and magnificent squares filled with palaces, temples, and pagoda roofs. Imagine this taking place on one of the special nights of the Tihar/Dipawali, festival of lights, when the millions of stars above reflect the candles flickering in every nook of the city, and you truly have a night to remember. Bhaktapur Night, “A Cultural event to explore Bhaktapur”, arranged to promote evening tourism at this renewed cultural site was an outstanding success this November. Visitors and locals gathered, as dusk fell, to join the torch light procession through the winding streets, squares and alleyways. A traditional band beat the drums and cymbals, whilst a group of young boys lit torch flares to guide the procession. Two dancing lions pranced among the crowds entertaining the children with their frolics. Locals holding laughing babies and smiling elderly residents, probably reminiscing on a bygone era, lined the route of the walk, Candles and oiled lamps lit up all the curbs and entrances to the shops and houses, through the squares, there were scenes of local cultural and traditional crafts. Weaving, beating rice, pottery and wine making were all being demonstrated by ladies in traditional black and red costumes. The wine making was particularly popular as samples of the powerful local wine were being poured out, adding even more enjoyment to the festivities. Our hostess, doing an excellent job of explaining the ancient and modern processes, described each scene. The procession eventually arrived at Taumadhi Tole, one of the main squares, where a dance area and raised platform for dining overlooked Nyatapola temple, beautifully illuminated by lamps framing its pagoda shapes against the night sky. A program of live cultural music and fabulously costumed dancers really kept everyone entertained, some of us even joined in. The catering was excellent and the continued flow of various regional brews really kept the party spirit going well into the evening.

It certainly was a night to remember.

A big thank you to the Tourism Development Committee, the organizers, volunteers, crafts people, dancers and all the residents for making my Dipawali very special in Bhaktapur.

Bhaktapur Nigth Organized
Bhaktapur Tourism Development Committee (BTDC), established in 1997 with the objective of promoting healthy and sustainable tourism in Bhaktapur, organized “Bhaktapur Night” on the 14th of November 2001. The programme, promoted by Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) was organized as the special Dipawali Night in Bhaktapur, aiming to promote evening tourism activities. The event was very successful. Even in the gloomy days of tourism in Nepal, we had sufficient participants. As the programmes were performed on open square many even enjoyed the night for free. Participation and co-operation of the local people was just overwhelming. The programme clearly proved that in order to promote evening tourism activities in Bhaktapur such events has to be organized in a regular manner and tourists should know about them. BTDC is very much encouraged and definitely looks forward to organizing more of such events in the days to come. Thanks to NTB, Bhaktapur Municipality and Space Time Publication Ganesh Air Cargo, Bhaktapur Cotton Textile, Sky Net Courier, TNT Worldwide Courier, Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN), Tourist Guide Association of Nepal (TURGAN), Spectrum Pashmina Dyer, Alpine Travels, Nagarkot Naldum Tourism Committee and all other supporters for their co-operation in making the event possible.

Sister City Relation between Bhaktapur & Lijiang
Mayor of Bhaktapur city, Mr. Prem Suwal visited Lijiang city of China last October to participate in the International UNESCO Conference on Cultural Heritage Management & Tourism: Models for Cooperation Among Stakeholders. During his stay in Lijiang he met with the Governor of Naxi County, Government Mr. He Liang Hui and discussed about the historic relationship between Nepal and China. They also exchanged experiences on the preservation work being carried out in the respective cities Bhaktapur & Lijiang, both of which are listed under the UNESCO world heritage sights. Along with discussing possibilities of mutual co-operation. They also keenly exchanged ideas on the possibilities of establishing sister city relation between Bhaktapur & Lijiang. During the meeting it is obvious that both cities will benefit in future with such relationship. Specially while we are expecting and preparing to welcome Chinese tourists in the country. It is worth recalling that Bhaktapur Municipality had decided to charge only Rs. 50.00 for Chinese tourists visiting Bhaktapur against $ 10 for foreigners.
